My Thoughts on "Days at Morisaki Bookshop"
Author- Satoshi Yagosawa
The book feels like a light breeze of air even though the start of the book has own main character in considerable panic. There are 2 main characters and a few background characters which are not essential to the story but are part of the reasons for story to move forward.
Main Characters:-
Takako - Thinks she is Ordinary-looking (but aren't we all)
- Considerable tall
Satoru - Takako's Uncle
- Inherited the Morisaki Bookshop in Jimbocho from his father
Secondary Characters:-
Hideaki - Worked at same company as Takako, was cheating on Takako
Sabu - Old man who is a regular at the Morisaki bookstore
Tomo - Works at cafe near bookshop, becomes friends with Takako
Takano - also works at cafe as a chef.
Momoko - Satoru's wife
The book starts when our main character i.e. Takako gets her heart broken by her then boyfriend Hideaki, he tells her that he's getting married. Not asking to get married but telling that he is getting married. Which breaks Takako's heart and she has a partial breakdown considering she still has to keep seeing him at her job almost every day and this makes Takako decide to quit her job. Even though things are going downhill, except for some empathy we as readers do not feel much. This is pretty much like a part of life, nothing crazy or out of ordinary.
After quitting Takako just sleeps the whole day not having many productive things to do. And then enters her uncle. He calls her out of nowhere and invites her to not only help at his bookstore but also live there as Takako can't go on like this without making money. And after thinking things through she decides to take her uncle up on that offer. She moves into the second floor of the store with minimum life necessities.
While at the story she still keeps us the same routine of sleeping and lazing around until one day she has a epiphany of sorts and in the middle of night she starts to search a book to read. Luckily considering that she lives in a bookstore there are plenty of options, she starts reading a book and quickly finds solace in this hobby. This not only helps her getting out of the slump but also helps her reconnect with her uncle Satoru who is doing his best to take care of this small shop of secondhand books. Book reading gives Takako hope and new friends and also a little push to stray away from her comfort zone and try to get her life back on track.
Throughout the book there are many moments for Takako and Satoru to reconnect and strengthen their bond not only and uncle and niece but also as friends with the same hobby. As you read further into the book as a book reader you understand the things Takako feels and the pride and joy Satoru takes in this small and almost going under Bookstore.
These have been my thoughts on this book so far, if you have different opinions on this do let me know so we can have a chat about it. Thank You.
